Students celebrate Black History Month
BB King and other African American artists made an appearance at Pass Road Elementary School this afternoon.
Students dressed up as various musicians during this year’s Black History Month program to showcase the role African Americans played in the creation of Blues music. Hundreds of students, parents, and community members filled the school’s gymnasium to watch fifth graders bring black history to life through songs and skits.
They picked the music theme because it correlates with Mississippi’s bicentennial celebration this year. Fifth grader Kayla Douglas said, “Without the activists, you probably wouldn’t be in this school right now or in the same class as some Caucasian people. I think it’s really important to know about your history.”
Students practiced for weeks in order to prepare for today’s special program. As a treat, a local Blues band performed several classics for the crowd.
