Students and Historical Society of Gulfport team up for cemetery tour
Students of Central and Pass Elementary provided a cemetery tour, telling the stories of those laid to rest in the Historic Mississippi City Cemetery.
The gifted students of both schools dressed in clothing worn during the time period and hosted a walking tour in collaboration with the Historical Society of Gulfport.
Descendants of those buried in the cemetery also shared their ancestor’s stories. Teacher Melanie Davis said, “Six different groups that we’re focused on. Two of those are family groups. We had the descendants come in and talk to our students, and so they really got a passion that kind of could put a face with a name.”
Student Genesis Gomez said, “I really feel like it’s a time for us to like, connect with the people from like back then and see their lives, their personalities.”
“So, we want to involve the community and make sure that those stories and our local heroes are recognized and passed on for future gender generations to know as well.”
The students also created a walking tour map for guests to explore the cemetery at any time on their own.
