Student Arrested for Weapon Possession
A Harrison County student was arrested this afternoon after police found multiple weapons in his backpack.
News 25’s Kendra Turley joins us from North Gulfport Seventh and Eighth Grade School with the details.
Gulfport police received a call around 12:30 this afternoon about a student in possession of a firearm. When officers arrived, they discovered the seventh grade male student brought not one, but seven weapons to school. Those weapons include a pellet gun and multiple knives, one of those knives in the shape of a firearm.
According to police, the 13-year-old brought the weapons to school on a dare. The incident is still under investigation, but officials believe he had no intent of actually using any of the items confiscated.
Officers located the student and confiscated each weapon with the teamwork of students and school administrators. About three different students noticed the weapons and notified a Gulfport Police school resource officer.
Gulfport Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Joshua Bromen said, “They went with the ‘see something, say something.’ We can’t say enough about these students. They get it. They’re smart and they understand that ‘not my campus, not my city’ and they get that. They’re quick to notify and help and assist in any way to get these situations stopped before they’re started.”
A similar situation occurred back in April when a student brought a loaded gun, ammo and a mask to the same campus. No one was injured in either situation.
The student involved in today’s incident has not yet been identified. He’s currently being held at the Harrison County Youth Detention Facility on the charge of possession of a weapon by a student.
