Street sentenced, family receives justice
Scotty Street, the man found guilty for murdering a retired Lucedale teacher in December 2014, will spend the rest of his life behind bars without parole. The sentencing comes as a result of Street’s trial which ended this afternoon in Jackson County Court.
Peace, that’s all the family of 55-year-old Frankie Fairley say they want, the retired Lucedale teacher was murdered in December 2014 and now the man who killed her will spend the rest of his life behind bars. Fairley’s brother, Thaddeus Fairley, said, “This has been a long road. Soon will be three years in December so this has been a long road so we’re glad to finally get to this point.”
Fairley was a mother to thirteen children, her big family, the center of her life, those family members sat in on Street’s capital murder trial that came to an end Thursday afternoon. Jackson County District Attorney Tony Lawrence said, “I think the family is really glad that they finally got to hear a jury. They’ve been waiting for three years for this and I think they’re glad it’s done.”
Street stabbed Fairley 37 times and then left her to die near her home in Hurley. Street then stole Fairley’s van and robbed a store in D’Iberville. Doctors told the court that Street was diagnosed with a severe mental illness that may have impacted his actions the day he committed murder. Before the jury went into deliberation, the district attorney pointed out evidence that Street did know what he did was wrong. “It seemed like the trial kind of turned into all about Scotty Street and she was a special woman and I think the jury did do that, they listened to all the evidence and made the decision they felt like they could make,” said Lawrence.
Killed for her kindness is what prosecutors say about Fairley’s death as they believe the retired special needs teacher was just trying to help Street out the day she died. “With raising children, it was a big family. She just loved giving to the kids and the community and doing what she could do for the children,” said Fairley.
Street walked out of the courtroom with handcuffs and will spend the remainder of his days in prison without parole.
