Storm Preparation
Tornado warnings and funnel clouds took the Gulf Coast by surprise earlier this week. More severe weather is headed this way.
In preparation, the City of Gulfport moved piles of sand and sandbags to three separate locations for residents to use if they please.
Sandbags are provided at the Orange Grove Community Center on Dedeaux Road, 42nd Avenue at the fire station and the intersection of Hewes Avenue and Glover Street.
City workers are no longer there to assist with the process, but all of the necessary supplies are still on the scene for residents to use. City of Gulfport Director of Public Works Wayne Miller said, “It’s best to be safe now. If you flooded in the past weeks, it would not hurt to go ahead and come get you some sand bags just in case. You can keep them around the house if needed. Just be proactive with it. We know what happened on April 28th and we don’t expect that much rain but we do expect some rain tomorrow.”
The city will have on-call crews monitoring the sand and bags throughout the evening to determine if any additional materials are needed.
