Stone County Sheriff’s Department testing new surveillance system

After a vote during a Stone County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Stone County Sheriff’s Department is allowed to use new software for security camera footage.

The surveillance system, Flock Safety software, can analyze security camera footage more quickly than a human. Residents are debating whether it will enhance community safety or raise privacy concerns.

Peyton, a student at MGCCC, thinks this will make her feel more secure on the Perkinston campus.

District 5 Supervisor Nathan Bond was the sole vote against the software’s use. When asked for a statement, he emphasized the need for a “balance between public safety and our personal freedom.”

One resident noted that simply being in public likely means being tracked or spotted.
