Steve Campbell high on Tony Brown
Another one of the headliners throughout the three-day coaching clinic is South Alabama Head Coach Steve Campbell, formerly of MGCCC.
One of the last commitments he received was from that of East Central running back Tony Brown, who jumped all over his only division I offer. Mississippi’s Gatorade Player of the Year scored 50 touchdowns as a senior en route to his Hornets advancing all the way to the 4A state title game for the first time in school history.
Yet somehow, being undersize led to being under recruited, until Campbell saw his next level potential. “Tony is a special, special football player and he’s a guy, you don’t rush for over 6,000 yards in two years by accident, you do that because you’re a great football player. And you’ve got to watch him to understand that ’cause if you just look at his measurables you’re going to say he might be a little small for Division I-A college football. But then you throw the film on and you watch his work ethic, you listen to his coaches talk about him, Tony’s got that whatever it is that makes a guy special.”
Brown was part of a record signing day class for East Central featuring three D1 players including former and future teammate at USA offensive lineman Wyatt Green, as well as Mississippi State signee Brad Cumbest.
