Staying safe around fireworks

Battalion Chief Joe Bates of the Biloxi Fire Department visited WXXV News 25 to talk about firework safety ahead of the 4th of July holiday.

Bates says it is always important to never allow children to use fireworks alone. He also encourages people to use the flint that they purchased with the fireworks to light them and to never use a lighter.

People are allowed to use fireworks on Biloxi beaches.  The only beach areas where you can not use fireworks are from the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor to Oak Street.

There are also many ways you can celebrate the fourth without using fireworks.

Some of those patriotic ideas include:

  • Use glow sticks, they glow in the dark and are safer than using sparklers.
  • Use noisemakers
  • Set up an outdoor movie night, using a screen and projector.
  • Use silly string
  • Create a craft with the family.
  • Get a red, white, and blue cake to ring in the holiday.

Biloxi Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and fun 4th of July holiday.
