State Superintendent of Education Visits Gulf Coast

Changes in the way we’re educating our children is a popular topic around the country. Coinciding this week with the release of low test scores along the Coast, the State Superintendent of Education visited with business leaders on the Coast.

Dr. Carey Wright was the guest speaker at the Gulf Coast Business Council Wednesday morning. Dr. Wright is a big advocate of supporting early education and says getting all children on an equal playing field is crucial.

Dr. Wright says, “Poverty plays a huge factor for a lot of these children who come to school without the same sets of experiences that children that come from more affluent families have. For me, if we can give them all that great start in Pre-K, they would all just have a leg up when they’re coming into kindergarten with their language and their social skills and the kinds of things they’re ready to learn academically. So I think we’ve got to have this conversation and figure out where we start. We’ve got to start somewhere.”
