State Senate passes Mississippi School Safety Guardian Act

The state Senate passed a bill that will allow teachers who are trained to carry weapons at school.

The bill would create the Mississippi School Safety Guardian Act, which would allow for armed, trained teachers in public and private schools.

The bill, if passed in the House and signed by the governor, would create a firearms training and licensure program for teachers who choose to participate.

Mississippi Department of Homeland Security would run the program. Participating teachers would be required to go through a state enhanced gun carry permit program and have additional training for the new program.

Those who have been through the training would be protected from civil and criminal prosecution.
