State Season Opens for Red Snapper

Get your docks ready, Mississippi’s red snapper season is launching off today.
Territorial waters are now open for fishermen to catch red snappers. The state season will go until September 6th.
The Department of Marine Resources limits two fish per person a day. The fish caught can’t exceed 16 inches.
The federal red snapper season will begin June 1st.
Spray Ya Later Charters Captain Clarence Seymour tells News 25 he’s already ready. He says he has half the season booked. “It’s probably one of the easiest fish to catch. It’s a reef fish. That basically means that these fish normally stay in their habitat through the whole time of their lifespan. Now, they may move from wreck to wreck but they mostly live on artificial bottoms, oil rigs and structures.”
The DMR is urging all vessels, private or for-hire, landing red snapper to use the “Tails n Scales” electronic system for reporting fishing trips. More information about the system can be found on the DMR’s website.
