State of our Coast
Shrimping, eco-tourism, the port, Ingalls: those are just a few of the things that keep our Coast running. How can they all work together? Department of Marine Resources Executive Director Jamie Miller says that is one of the main goals of State of our Coast.
The day-long event in its second year is being held at the Golden Nugget Casino today. Coastwide leaders will speak about topics ranging from updates on Port Restoration to round tables on environmental challenges for fisheries and public health. Their main objective is to work as a collective unit to keep the Coast running like a well-oiled machine today and in the future. “The topics that you would find in the news and in the newspaper we want to bring those to light and inform people. Try to answer those questions and try to come to some consensus on how we move forward together,” said Miller.
Port of Gulfport Executive Director Jonathan Daniels said, “In many ways, ports of the past have been looked at as more of a polluter, we want to be part of the solution. We’re not the only part of it. We’re a very small postage stamp within the Coast itself.”
Another highlight of the event is a panel discussion by Coast legislators on this year’s legislative session and its impact on coastal recovery.
