State Auditor releases report on undocumented immigrants

A new report from State Auditor Shad White claims Mississippi taxpayers spent more than ten and a half million dollars on Medicaid services for undocumented immigrants over a three-year period.

The report says those costs came between federal fiscal years 2023 and 2025, largely tied to emergency medical care.

Under federal law, hospitals are required to provide emergency treatment regardless of immigration status.

The auditor’s office also says the state had not been reporting those costs to the federal government until after a 2024 audit raised concerns.

White criticized the spending, saying the money could have gone toward other priorities like education or law enforcement and pointed to stricter immigration enforcement as a solution.
