Start With Hello Week

Ocean Springs students work to end cliques and promote inclusion in the district…all by saying hello.
Start with hello week kicked off today in the school district with ‘hey day’.
Students made name tags so everyone can spark up a conversation between classmates, especially if anyone is walking or sitting alone.
And it does not end today…Tuesday is hey wall, Wednesday is wear green day, Thursday is act of kindness, and Friday is no one eats alone.

Students in the superintendent’s advisory council came up with the idea and hope to inspire younger students to be more inclusive.

“It’s all about ending social isolation in our schools because there are a lot of cliques and that’s one thing we addressed in our meetings.”
– Daelyn Cook Superintendent’s Advisory Board

“Seeing someone walking alone in the hallway just says hey, walks with them to class, and make them feel comfortable and like they’re included.”
– Anna Nesya James Superintendent’s Advisory Board

“When you strike up a conversation with just any student you’re not leaving them out and they’re not feeling like they’re alone.”
– Benjamin Cuny Superintendent’s Advisory Board

This idea stems from the sandy hook promise organization preventing youth violence.
