Stage Combat Classes
Sword play took over the Mary C. Cultural Center this morning.
Meridian Community College theater instructor Steve Nabors was giving stage combat lessons to the Biloxi High School theater class. The lessons are a passion of Nabors. He’s been a stage combat specialist since the late ‘70s.
While the sword and combat are important, Nabors made sure to let these students know footwork is key to a great show.
But don’t worry, after they got the footwork down, the swords came out and the students were able to get hands on experience on how to fight safely on stage. “It’s good to teach them the right skills instead of just letting them go up and you know, I did it myself when I was that age. We didn’t have a choreographer. We just went out and winged it,” said Nabors.
Biloxi High theatre teacher Olivia Dunwoody said, “Just to have the opportunity to do a workshop for stage combat is something that my students haven’t had the opportunity to do before so I thought it would be a great opportunity for them to get some experience doing some really fun exercise in stage combat.”
The lessons weren’t just for students. Adults were welcome to the same training earlier today.
