St. Stanislaus high school boys soccer returns to the state championship for the fifth time in six years
South Mississippi high school soccer programs have a rich history of competing for, winning and dominating high school state championships. This weekend there are six local high school programs who are looking to repeat history and bring down some more hardware from Jackson, MS to the coast.
The St. Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaw boys soccer team is currently ranked the 8th best team in the country and are headed to their fifth state championship game in the last six seasons. They will have a shot at redemption on Friday as they face off against St. Andrew’s – the same school who ended their season last year in the state championship.
WXXV sports had the chance to speak with Rock-A-Chaw head coach Zach Villarrubia and he spoke on what his team is looking forward to most with the opportunity at hand.
“I think the whole process,” Villarrubia said. “We are leaving today [Thursday], we are staying the night and I think for the boys you work all year to get the camaraderie. The whole process of going up there, eating team dinners together and traveling together is fun for the boys. Obviously, the biggest focus is on the game. St. Andrew’s beat us last year in the state championship so it would be nice to get up there and hopefully get a little bit of redemption on them.”
St. Stanislaus plays on Friday at 7:00 P.M. at Ridgeland high school in Jackson, MS.
