St. Patrick High School plays host to LEGO robotics competiton

St. Patrick Catholic High School played host to a Lego Robotics Competition this weekend.

Teams came from as far as Southaven to take part in the Mississippi First Lego League’s Submerged championship.

Kids built Lego robots and programmed them to complete missions.

Teams went from the practice table to the competition floor, having a total of 2 minutes 30 seconds to complete objectives.

One team out of D’Iberville includes a mother/daughter duo, both saying the most important part is learning a new skill.

“I was really excited when the school started up a team so I was happy to help,” said Kim Pevey, the coach for the Sacred Heart Storm and Hurricanes. “I like helping the kids code. I want them to have a good time and give them exposure to different STEM resources.”

“I thought it would be fun to join them and look at what it was. The next year, I started doing it and it turned out to be really fun,” said Vivian Pevey, a 6th-grade member of the Sacred Heart Storm. “I would say definitely do it, it’s a really fun thing to try out and there is something for basically everybody.”

The Sacred Heart girls team won third place in the state. They are advancing to an invitational at a later date.
