St. Michaels Celebrates 50th Anniversary
St. Michaels is known as the “fishermen’s church,” named after the Croatian and French fishermen that established the area. Most recently, Hurricane Katrina wiped out much of the housing near the parish, resulting in a diminished congregation, but Father Greg Barras expects some of his original parishioners at the 50th anniversary celebration this weekend.
Barras says, “We’re having a mass with the bishop. I guess we’ll bless the church again. There’s a parish picnic afterwards, which is always a part of our fall celebration, calling home people who have been associated with the parish over the past two or three decades.”
St. Michael is now in the process of re-building its family life center, which was destroyed during Katrina.
