A St. Martin man will spend 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to trying to kills his mother.

30-year-old Grady Walker pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court to 20 years with 10 to serve and 10 in post-release supervision.

Walker was arrested in 2022 after Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in St. Martin about domestic violence.

On scene, they found Walker outside in front of the house, then found Walker’s mother on the floor, suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Walker’s mother recovered from the stabbing but has since died. She filed an affidavit with the court before her passing, asking that her son not be prosecuted.

The state however, proceeded with the case because of the violent nature of the crime.

Walker underwent psychological evaluation and was found competent to change his plea to guilty, which he did Monday.

The court was made aware of Walker’s psychological issues. He told the court he had been off his medication and smoked marijuana that day and thought maybe it was laced with something that triggered his mental health issues.
