Sports betting begins in Mississippi

It’s an exciting day for the Magnolia State. Sports betting officially began in Biloxi and Tunica.

From rolling dice to opening sports books, Mississippi hit the jackpot when sports betting was legalized in licensed casinos across the state. Mississippi Hotel and Hospitality Association Executive Director Larry Gregory said, “We’ve been looking for different amenities to bring people back to Mississippi. A lot of states have gaming, they have slot machines, so this is a grand opportunity. “

Now, the wait is over after the first bets were placed simultaneously at the MGM Resorts Beau Rivage and Gold Strike Casino at noon, making Mississippi the fourth state in the United States to offer sports betting. The Sports Book was packed with local residents, sports celebrities, and people from out of state all waiting with excitement. “This is pretty cool because I’ve been coming to Biloxi for about 20 years on the junkets the casinos put out for us. Now you can do sports betting. I’ll never go to Vegas again.”

Invited guest former Miami Hurricane running back and two-time NFL All Pro Willis McGahee says it means a lot to him to be a part of this experience. “It’s a great honor to be invited by these guys, you know this group, this casino, this state. It is a real privilege to come out here and be a part of history.

It’s a unique day for the first sports wagers to take place, falling on the 26th anniversary of when the first pair of dice was rolled in Biloxi in 1992. “Ya know, that was chicken, our casinos coming 26 years ago, that was great for our Coast. This is gravy on that chicken.”

“We’re really excited. We think it’s going to create some excitement, some foot traffic, and bring a little revenue to the state.”
