Special Session On Budget Possible

Governor Phil Bryant could be forced to call a special session to balance the state budget if a record revenue is not generated this month. By law, the governor is requiring to keep the state’s budget balanced at all times. To offset shortfalls this fiscal year which ends at the end of the month, Bryant has already made midyear budget cuts twice and pulled 45 point 2 million dollars from the state’s rainy day fund. Mississippi law caps the amount a governor can pull from that fund at 50 million dollars so if more and four point eight million dollars is needed from the rainy day fund, Bryant will be forced to call a special legislative session to ask lawmakers to give him the authority to pull additional funds.
