Special Olympics Event YMCA Ocean Springs

Over 60 athletes competed this morning in the area event for the Special Olympics at the YMCA in Ocean Springs. The YMCA has hosted this event for about 30 years here in South Mississippi. Different areas of the competition include assisted swims, 25 and 50 meter swims, and back stroke. Athletes range in age from 12 to 60 years old all with the goal of having a good time. “Oh they love it like I said earlier when they leave they’re wanting to know when they’re coming back or when the next event is or are they going to participate or whatever so they are excited when they get to do this.” – Terry Higginbotham Area Director, Special Olympics Those who qualify will advance to the state level in May held at Keesler Air Force Base.
