Special legislative session now underway in Jackson
JACKSON, Miss. (WXXV)- Both houses of the State legislature are meeting in special session to pass a state budget, nearly two months after the regular session ended.
The proposed budget that lawmakers will debate is $7.1 billion dollars for fiscal year 2026. To get this done, it will require lawmakers looking over about 100 appropriation bills.
According to the governor, there has been spirited debate over capital expense funds for projects, but at the end of the day, the core functions of government have to be funded.
If the proposed budget is passed, the governor says recurring dollars for fiscal year 25 and 26 are roughly the same, meaning a flat rate.
We will continue to keep you updated as lawmakers continue their deliberations.
