Spatial Technology Laboratory Dedication at Gulfport High School
Forgotten graves in the Mississippi City Cemetery are found thanks to mapping software used by a group of local students.
Gulfport High students used geographic information system software to find unmaintained grave sites, some dating back to the 1800’s.
The Naval Technology Research Lab at Stennis Space Center loaned Gulfport High the software for the project. The class of spatial tech students presented their final projects to Stennis representatives today. Gulfport High spatial tech teacher Scott Pfaff said, “To watch students be able to start out knowing nothing, learn the ins and outs of the software and to literally go out into the world, collect some data, bring it back and put it to good use as if it’s something they’ve known how to do their whole lives. They’re very much digital natives.”
Pfaff tells News 25 Gulfport High is one of the only schools in the United States where students have the opportunity to work with this advanced technology.
