Southern Miss students walk across the stage for December graduation

Hats were thrown and cheers erupted as the December graduation at Southern Miss wrapped up today.

It was an exciting day at the University of Southern Mississippi as hundreds of Golden Eagles walked across the stage in front of their family and friends celebrating their graduation.

Reed Green Coliseum was filled with applause, some tears, and a lot of really creative caps.

As students put on their cap and gowns, fixed their stoles, and put their cords around their necks, they couldn’t help but think about all their memories made at Southern Miss and the hard work it took to get to this very moment. Class of 2022 graduate Jordan Callahan said, “This day means so much to me. I’ve spent the last two years in nursing school and the last four here at USM, and it’s been an amazing experience but it’s been a lot of hard work, sweat, and tears and now I know that it has all paid off walking across that stage and getting my diploma means that all my hard work has paid off.”

Class of 2022 graduate Madeline Vollenweider said, “My biggest takeaway from Southern Miss is definitely going to be all of the amazing friendships that I’ve made over the past few years. These people have helped me grow so much into the person I am today and I cannot be here without them.”

And the graduates soared across the stage and received a handshake from President Joe Paul and a high five from their very own mascot, Seymour.

Now that the Southern Miss graduates have officially walked across the stage and received their diplomas, there’s one specific graduate that has two reasons to celebrate and that’s because she just received the phone call of a lifetime!

Grace McLoughlin is a St. Patrick High School alum who just received her Bachelor of Science degree. Little did she know the excitement that was waiting for her outside the coliseum doors. “As I was walking out of graduation, I got the call from Midwestern University, which I’ve been trying to pursue a physician assistant degree there, and I just got the call that I was accepted, so it’s really exciting.”

McLoughlin went on to say that she was ecstatic and that this was the best day ever.
