Southern Miss staying the course at QB
The Southern Miss football team went into the opening week of the season with two viable options at quarterback, but two games into the new year the coaching staff has settled on one guy under center.
Kwadra Griggs remains atop the depth chart heading into week three with Keon Howard serving as the backup. Griggs played the second half against Kentucky, but started versus Southern on Saturday and didn’t do anything to suggest he was giving the job back in USM’s 45-0 win.
He completed 15 of his 23 passes for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions which makes for far less quarterback controversy going forward. Southern Miss Head Football Coach Jay Hopson said, “Through Week one he earned it, through Week two he did a good job, so he’ll get the start Week three, but I think I’m going to let competition continue.”
Southern Miss Offensive Coordinator Shannon Dawson said, “What he did the second half of Kentucky, and then that game obviously I thought he played well. I mean nobody plays perfect, there’s obviously some things we have to clean up, but he’s definitely the guy moving forward.”
Up next for the Golden Eagles is their first road game of the season at Louisiana Monroe at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
