Southern Miss standout Matt Wallner named Freshman of the Year
For the fourth time over the last seven days, Southern Miss standout Matt Wallner has received some form of post-season recognition. Perhaps a little repetitive, but today’s accolade certainly takes the cake.
One day after earning a spot on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Freshman First Team, Wallner has been tabbed as the National Freshman Hitter of the Year by the same publication. A well-deserved honor for USM’s cleanup hitter who belted 19 home runs in his first year at Southern Miss, a new freshman school record that led all Golden Eagles in 2017.
Good news for the Black and Gold is that Wallner still has two more years before reaching draft eligibility.
