Southern Miss run game ranks 125th in FBS rushing
The Southern Miss football program is less than a year removed from the days of Ito Smith, the school’s all-time leader for all-purpose yards and total touchdowns. Replacing the now Atlanta Falcons running back is proving to be easier said than done.
The Golden Eagles head into their homecoming game against UTSA averaging less than 100 yards per game on the ground. While the black and gold are 13th in the nation in passing, there’s only five teams averaging fewer rushing yards per game in the entire country.
George Payne’s departure due to injury and T’Rod Daniels deciding to transfer certainly hasn’t helped matters, but Head Coach Jay Hopson isn’t making excuses for running aground. “One thing we have to do better, we have to establish the run better than we have earlier in the season. And that’s something we’ve been able to do the previous two years, we’ve got to do that. And I think everybody has a piece of that action.”
Through five games, USM has just two rushing touchdowns as a team and no individual with more than 73 yards in a single game.
