Southern Miss recharged for North Texas
This season, only 10 FBS college football teams are averaging more than 40 points per game while giving up less than 20 per contest on defense. One of them is USM’s week seven opponent: North Texas.
Bad news for Southern Miss whose 20-17 loss to the Mean Green was the difference in winning a Conference USA west division title and finishing in third place behind UAB. This time around, the Golden Eagles are boasting a league mark of 1-0 ahead of UNT’s 1-1 showing.
Coming off a bye week following a hard fought loss to Auburn, Head Coach Jay Hopson thinks his Golden Eagles are starting to come around at the right time. “We’re getting better. We’re that football team that I think is just going to get better and better and better. Again, I said that earlier in the year and I had that feeling just with Jack, we had a new quarterback, we had some young receivers, young running backs and you just knew and I think we’re seeing this about midseason, we’re a football team, I think that’s what we have to do. We just get better and better and I think we’re a team that I think, again, is man, like I said earlier, I like this football team. We’re a talented football team, and I don’t think we’ve even come close to playing our best football yet.”
The Black and Gold travel to Denton for Saturday’s 1 p.m. kickoff before returning to Hattiesburg for homecoming.
