Southern Miss quarterback battle returns

Southern Miss Head Coach Jay Hopson has always been a firm believer that two quarterbacks are better than none. While that may be true, the return of Kwadra Griggs has also brought the return of USM’s qb battle.

On Friday, the Golden Eagles reinstated Griggs from his indefinite suspension, stemming from a pre-season student conduct matter. While he was away from the team, Jack Abraham played well enough to be the starter, but Griggs will have every opportunity to win that gig back.

Friday was Griggs’ first practice in over a month, but Coach Hopson says the redshirt senior is already starting to shake off the rust. “He looked good. I’ll tell you he had a good day yesterday, I think we knocked a little rust off last Friday but I think he looked good yesterday and today. So again, we’re watching it close but I think he’s getting better and better. He’s doing what we thought he would do, he’s getting better and better and I see him each day. He’s getting in better conditioning, better shape so I’m excited about him.”

In week two, Abraham threw two interceptions which is the same number Griggs had all of last year. The Black and Gold are hosting Rice on Saturday for a 6 p.m. kick-off from M.M. Roberts Stadium.
