Southern Miss QB battle open for business
For the better part of Jay Hopson’s tenure at Southern miss, there’s never really been a surefire that’s-the-guy starting quarterback. At the same time, certain situations haven’t really allowed for him to have one.
For example, in his first year, Nick Mullens was hurt for the majority of the 2016 season. Last year, the job was split between Keon Howard and Kwadra Griggs. Griggs got hurt this spring and Howard transferred so more guys are getting more reps.
Hopson says the quarterback battle is a full-go as the Golden Eagles enter fall camp with an unsettled depth chart for the second year in a row. “We’ve got a tough competition at that position. It’s a tough battle. We’re going to throw that ball out there. Let the best man win the job. The quarterback position, you always need two or three. That’s one thing I’ve learned the last two years, too, up close. I just know this, competition in everything makes you better. I don’t care if it’s football or business, it does not matter.”
Hopson was in Jackson at the Trade Mart for tonight’s Southern Miss all-star party. The Black and Gold start fall camp in Hattiesburg on August 2nd.
