Southern Miss pitcher Justin Storm South Beach bound
Back in September, Southern Miss football made a road trip down to South Beach to take on Miami in Week 2.
Some members of the Southern Miss baseball team were there, staying right down the road at Tim and Danny Lynch’s house in nearby Jupiter.
One of them being Justin Storm, which is what they like to call foreshadowing.
On Monday, Storm was drafted in the seventh round of the MLB Draft (203rd overall) by none other than the Miami Marlins.
Storm is coming off an All-American campaign in 2023, receiving third-team honors courtesy of the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings.
This season, the junior lefty was a shutdown closer for USM, recording eight saves and seven wins to go along with a 2.36 ERA and 72 strikeouts across 45.2 innings.
He got even better in the post-season with a 1.04 ERA and 23 K’s in 17-plus innings.
Now it’s on to the next chapter for Storm, whose heart continues to bleed Black and Gold.
“Southern Miss has meant everything. I mean it’s hard to step away from. I came into draft day knowing that I had a good chance to go, but I also knew that if it didn’t work out, I would’ve been just as happy finishing out my career at Southern Miss. Love the place, love the coaches and the fans, man, it’s just – they make it tough, tough to leave, all things considered. But just super grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to be there.”
Storm is the first USM player to be picked by the Marlins since Taylor Braley in 2017.
