Southern Miss Lady Eagles defeat the UAB Blazers in the first match of the WNIT

The Southern Miss Lady Eagles hosted the UAB Blazers at Reed Green Coliseum for their first postseason test of the year.

The Lady Eagles trailed the Blazers for the entirety of the first half and they headed to the locker room trailing 18-22. That few minutes of rest a motivational speech from their head coach Joye Lee McNelis is exactly what the doctor ordered, as the Lady Eagles continued to fight back, but UAB’s lead began to increase heading into the fourth quarter 48-58.

Due to the transfer portal and other possible circumstances, the Golden Eagles only had seven women dressed out for this game, but lucky for them, they’re McNelis strong. They go on a 6-0 run and take the lead 69-65 with four minutes left in the game.

With the help of immaculate grit and just pure talent by Dominque Davis and Melyia Grayson, the Lady Eagles make a 14 point comeback to win their first game of the WNIT with a final score of 79-74. What an absolutely incredible game for the black and gold.

Southern Miss will go on to host Murray State on Saturday March 23rd for game two of the invitational.

We wish Coach McNelis and the Golden Eagles the best of luck this weekend!
