Southern Miss junior QB announces decision to transfer

Keon Howard never had much clarity as a quarterback at Southern Miss and he still doesn’t. The rising junior has been in a position battle with Kwadra Griggs among others for more than a year and now Howard is clarifying things for himself.

This afternoon, he announced via Twitter his decision to leave the USM program with intentions of pursuing his education and football career elsewhere.

Following the 2018 spring game, Howard appeared to be the front-runner for the job, but the addition of QB transfer Jack Abraham only complicates things further.

Howard started seven of the nine games he appeared in last season, throwing for nearly 1,200 yards, eight touchdowns, and five picks.

The Laurel High School product was thrust into action as a freshman following a thumb injury to Nick Mullens which means Howard will still have his redshirt for whichever school he attends next.

Howard originally committed to Memphis out of high school.

Here’s what Howard had to say about the move on social media: “It was with great regret that I inform you of my decision to not continue my education and football career at Southern Miss.” He goes on to say, “I will not forget the moments spent battling at the Rock with my teammates and the loyalty from the fans in victory or defeat.”
