Southern Miss football preparing for Lending Tree Bowl

There is not a single player on the Southern Miss football roster that has experienced a bowl game win at Southern Miss.

Beyond that, only 18 players were a part of USM’s last bowl game appearance in 2019 and some of them were most likely on a redshirt.

The point being that the Golden Eagles have a real opportunity to bring some hardware back to Hattiesburg for the first time since 2016 when they take on the old Conference USA foe Rice in Saturday’s Lending Tree Bowl.  Quarterback Trey Lowe III said, “The preparation has been really good. I think we’re clicking on all cylinders. I think we’re right where we’re supposed to be, and I think we’re going to win the game.”

Defensive back Malik Shorts said, “Bro, it’s just been wild going on these last few days. Everybody has been having fun. We’ve just been enjoying each other, enjoying our company and just having fun, trying to find fun with everybody being at work and really ain’t nothing to do, so we’ve just been finding fun, going out a little bit, going to eat. And bro, everybody is just having fun, playing games, going in the game room, the lounge and just being there, building that team chemistry and enjoying each other for real.”

Head Coach Will Hall said, “I think it’s a huge advantage, a neat thing for us that we were able to come here for our fans, for our players’ families. We have a lot of local players on our team. Some of their families are going to be able to be here easily. We’ve got a lot of fans that’ll also be able to come, so I think it’s a cool deal to not be too far away from home. But man, we’re just proud to be back in the bowl season. Like I said, it’s been a tough deal here to get it back to respectability. We’re proud that we are here, and we want to play well.”

Tomorrow’s game against Rice kicks off at 4:45 p.m. from South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile.

Also tomorrow, Jackson State takes on North Carolina Central in the Cricket Celebration Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia at 11 a.m.
