Southern Miss football is bowl eligible
USM’s bowl chances took a big hit following a heartbreaking overtime loss at UAB, but not to be denied, Southern Miss responded with two straight wins to close out the regular season.
That puts the Golden Eagles at 6-5 following Saturday’s 39-7 triumph at UTEP, but the Black and Gold aren’t out of the woods just yet.
As it stands now, there’s not enough bowl games to go around for all bowl eligible teams, leaving Southern Miss Athletic Director Jon Gilbert politicking for USM’s fourth consecutive bowl game appearance. “We are not guaranteed a bowl spot. Presently today, there are 81 bowl eligible teams for 78 bowl spots. Depending on how a football game plays out this weekend, there could be 82 teams for 78 spots. Our attendance in the last two bowl games, and certainly the brand and history of Southern Miss football is very strong.”
If you’re a Southern Miss fan there’s a pair of outcomes you’re looking for this weekend, one a Marshall win over Virginia Tech and two a UCF win over Memphis.
