Southern Miss fall camp preview: open season for starting QB job

USM opens up fall camp tomorrow without having named a starting quarterback. The front-runners are the incumbent Kwadra Griggs, junior college transfer Jack Abraham, and rising sophomore Marcelo Rodriguez.

Like Head Coach Jay Hopson always says, it’s better to have two, or in this case three, rather than none. “It is what it is, but I think we learned that lesson a couple years ago when Nick went down. I mean you’ve got to have some depth at quarterback, and I do feel like we have that. And so we’re going to put the ball out there and we’re going to let those guys compete. I think it’s important at that position more so than any other position, you’ve got to compete. So it’s a tough battle, but we do have some talented guys at that spot.”

Wide receiver Trevor Terry said, “Oh, it’s going to be fun for sure. I mean both of those guys can sling it and we’ve got some young guys back there, too. So just watching that battle unfold, I mean it’s going to be a good competition, but I feel good no matter who we’ve got back there.”

Southern Miss will hit the field for the first of 20 fall sessions tomorrow.
