Southern Miss embracing bowl game close to home
Coming into the 2022 season, one thing the Southern Miss football program really needed was a bowl game.
Now that USM is on its way to its first bowl game since 2019, another thing the program really needs is a bowl game win.
The Golden Eagles are on their way to the Lending Tree Bowl to take on their old Conference USA foe Rice, set for December 17th in Mobile.
The black and gold are in search of their first bowl game victory since 2016 when the school’s all-time leading passer Nick Mullens led them to a 28-21 win over Louisiana in the New Orleans Bowl.
Another short road trip for USM, giving the fan base a chance to show out at the same stadium Will Hall made his Southern Miss debut. Coach Hall said, “That’s great for our fans. I think that’s another advantage of being in the Sun Belt is the bowl tie-ins. I think it’s an advantage of having a historically great fan base. I’ve said it a lot of time since I’ve been here, I think we’ve got the best fan base in all of the Group of Five. I think when the bowl selection came out and the fact that we were so highly sought after, it proves that.”
Southern Miss and Rice will kick things off on Saturday, December 17th from South Alabama’s Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile at 4:45 p.m.
