Southern Miss Baseball: winning mid-week games becoming the norm
At this same time last year, the Southern Miss baseball team was off and rolling with an overall mark of 19-7. The only thing holding the Golden Eagles back was their record in mid-week games, but those haven’t been a problem so far in 2017.
USM beat South Alabama on Tuesday, making the quick turn-around to send New Orleans packing on Wednesday. The Black and Gold now have a record of 7-1 in mid-week games this season compared to a mark of just 3-5 at this same time last year.
According to Warrennolan.com, Southern Miss is the only team in Conference USA with an RPI in the top 40, having jumped up seven spots to number 27 after this week’s pair of wins. Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “When you get to the end of the year the committee, they look at how you do in the mid-weeks. Not only how you do in your conference, but how you do against uncommon opponents. And so for us to be able to get two wins against two quality programs, I felt like this week was big for our program.”
The Golden Eagles return to action this weekend with a three game series at Western Kentucky. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. tomorrow.
