Southern Miss Baseball: USM offense scoring 11 runs per game in 2017

Last year the Southern Miss baseball team had a knack for putting up the runs in bunches, something they called the microwave offense. This year, they might need to call it something else.
Through the team’s first seven games, USM is averaging a whopping 11 runs per game, compared to 9.7 at this same time in 2016. After leading Conference USA in home runs last season, the 6-1 Golden Eagles are already on pace to hit 20 more in 2017.
Sunday’s 18-2 win over Evansville is a prime example of what their offense is capable of, giving some of the younger up-and-comers the chance to show what they can do for the Black and Gold.
Southern Miss head baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “Just that everybody was ready to go. Obviously when you start getting a score that starts getting one-sided then guys get excited about playing, but we’re trying to get them at-bats and put them in situations that aren’t just blowout games. These are going to be for games that come in crucial times and we have to pinch hit.”
Southern Miss infielder Casey Maack said, “Wins like this for our team it just builds our confidence, knowing that we can do that at any time during the game. I mean an 11-run inning, that’s insane.”
Southern Miss pitcher Cody Carroll said, “Before I was a freshman getting the pregame jitters, I just remembered keep calm, take a deep breath and just let my pitching do the work.”
The Golden Eagles return to action at 6 p.m. tomorrow for a home game versus Tulane. USM went 0-2 against the Green Wave last year.
