Southern Miss baseball leadership in good hands

The 2021 Southern Miss baseball season is less than 72 hours away and the team’s leadership appears to be in good hands as we approach Opening Day.

Hunter Stanley and Will McGillis are the co-captains of this Golden Eagles ship, picking up where Matthew Guidry and Gulfport alum Alex Nelms left off last year.

Stanley is a senior right-handed pitcher that should see a lot of work out of the back end of the bullpen and McGillis is a sophomore second baseman who is actually playing his third position in three years.

The Black and Gold will go as they go and it’s an opportunity they don’t take lightly. Stanley said, “It means everything, man. I was a captain when I was at Meridian for two years and it means the world to me just because those are your teammates, those are your brothers.”

McGillis said, “I think I realize it more now that I have been voted a captain, how much it means to be a captain. And I saw this video of Tom Brady the other day, and he was talking to the Michigan football team, and he said that, in his 15 years in professional football, being voted a captain at Michigan is his proudest honor, and that’s kind of the way I look at it.”

The Golden Eagles lead off the new campaign at 4 p.m. Friday against Northwestern State from Pete Taylor Park.
