Southern Miss baseball improves to 10-2 in Conference USA

Even after Tuesday’s extra innings loss to Ole Miss, Southern Miss was still one of the hottest teams in the entire country heading into the weekend. The Golden Eagles went on to take the first two games from FIU before the Panthers slowed their roll on Sunday.
Yesterday’s 10-4 defeat was their first loss in Conference USA since March 24th and just their third loss in the last month. USM is now 26-7 overall and 10-2 in league play. Not to mention the Black and Gold have won 45 out of their last 52 games at home.
While the Eagles failed to sweep the opposition this weekend, they’re already thinking about revenge for tomorrow’s re-match against the Rebels. Southern Miss Centerfielder Matt Wallner said, “You just can’t let this one dwell on us and just tomorrow is a new day and Tuesday’s a new game and that’s the biggest game on our schedule and we’ll be fine. I know we will.”
Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry said, “I know our guys were really down from losing that game, but since then we’ve able to win two of the three since Ole Miss. We’ve gotten ourselves back in the taste of the win column.”
Southern Miss and Ole Miss will get things going at 7 p.m. tomorrow from Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg. USM has won 10 out of its last 13 games against the Rebels.
Now speaking of the Rebels, they’re finally getting back to their winnings ways, having swept Alabama over the weekend.
Mississippi State and LSU also coming off a pair of series wins. The Bulldogs are the most recent of the bunch to jump into the D1Baseball.com top 25 rankings.
A big part of that has been Brent Rooker, who is absolutely tearing up the SEC at the plate. Through 34 games he’s by far and away leading the league in almost every offensive category including all three for the triple crown race. The SEC and National Player of the Week hit six of those home runs this week alone.
