Southern Miss baseball embracing the grind heading into Hattiesburg Regional

Of the 16 regional host teams in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, Southern Miss is the only one that also hosted a conference tournament.

That’s a lot of home-cooking for the Golden Eagles who lead off their run to Omaha in less than 48 hours.

Home field advantage or not, no rest for the weary from here on out.

The eventual College World Series champion will have to win anywhere from 10 to 12 games and could play in as many as 16, all by June 27th.

USM Head Coach Scott Berry on the wear and tear of all those extra innings. “I think when you look at college baseball players that go to professional baseball, all of a sudden, the grind of that season – I know talking to Dozier and he thought a 56-game schedule was a tough grind until you get in there and you’re playing 160-something – that’s a real grind. But it becomes a mindset. At the end of the day, and that’s what the weight room is for, and that’s what we’ve been trying to train for since August to prepare ourselves both physically and mentally for this type of situation in this tournament.”

The number 11 seed, USM rolls out the welcome mat for Army West Point to lead off the Hattiesburg Regional at 1 p.m. Friday.
