Southern Miss back to back Conference USA Tournament Champions

The Southern Miss baseball team is no stranger to championship Sunday, now having played in the Conference USA Tournament title game in each of the past four seasons. Yesterday afternoon, the Golden Eagles were taking on Florida Atlantic for the chance to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Eagles coming off a shutout win over Rice in the semi-finals, now looking to go back-to-back over Florida Atlantic.

It’s a regional dogpile as the Golden Eagles win their second straight C-USA Tournament and their third in four years to advance to their fourth straight regional behind 19 straight shutout innings to close out the tournament.

A tenth inning walk-off home run, a combined no-hitter and now even more magic at MGM Park, yet another regional dogpile for the Golden Eagles as Conference USA runs through Southern Miss for the third time in four years.

The Black and Gold are getting it done by shutting out the opposition for the last 19 innings of this tournament. Matthew Guidry said, “Positive vibes! This feels great! Told you it was coming! All week long!”

J.C. Keys said, “That’s four! For years, four rings. Let’s go! Let’s go! We’re going to a regional, baby! Let’s go!”

Walker Powell said, “This is awesome, man. This team deserves this. This team deserves this, man. This is awesome. Nothing like it, nothing like it.”

Matt Wallner said, “I love you, Southern Miss. And everyone here. And we’re champions again. Everyone doubted us, we good. But we’re focused on the regional, let’s go.”

Head Coach Scott Berry said, “For me personally, just so satisfying just watching these kids have fun and go out and play and momentum, when you’re winning, momentum can be a monster. We saw it in ’09, not that this is an ’09 team, but certainly it’s the same thing. We went on, got hot in the regional and super regional and made it to Omaha. So winning is a huge momentum factor in it, and I feel like that certainly our guys just did not feel like they could lose.”

Now prior to this tournament, Southern Miss was very much on the bubble in terms of making it back to an NCAA Regional for the fourth year in a row, but that bubble has since been popped in a good way as the Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg with an automatic bid.

Head Coach Scott Berry had also been comparing this team’s resume to that of the 2009 College World Series team and that team didn’t even win this tournament.
