South Panola takes game 1 over George County in 6A Softball State Championship Series
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Game 1 of the Class 6A Softball State Championship series delivered intensity from start to finish as the George County Lady Rebels battled the South Panola Lady Tigers at the Southern Miss Softball Complex. Despite a strong start, George County ultimately fell short in a 5-3 loss, giving South Panola the early edge in the series.
George County wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the opening innings, No. 9 Kyleigh Howell came through with a clutch hit across the field, allowing Blakely Slay to sprint home from third and give the Lady Rebels a quick 1-0 lead.
The Lady Rebels’ defense backed up that early momentum with a series of key plays. No. 13 Braylee Bishop delivered a heads-up catch in the outfield, while Addison Davis kept South Panola hitters off balance in the circle with a strikeout that helped hold the Lady Tigers scoreless through the first few innings.
However, momentum began to shift midway through the game. South Panola broke through in the fifth inning, plating a run to even the score. The turning point came late, as the Lady Tigers capitalized on a missed opportunity in the outfield during the seventh inning. The miscue allowed multiple runs to cross the plate, pushing South Panola ahead 5-1.
Refusing to back down, George County mounted a late rally. In the bottom of the seventh, No. 12 Jordyn Bradley delivered a key hit that brought Hadleigh Tatum and Aryana Dixon home, cutting the deficit to 5-3 and giving the Lady Rebels new life.
But the comeback effort fell just short. South Panola secured the final out to seal the Game 1 victory and take a 1-0 lead in the championship series.
George County will now turn its focus to Game 2, where the Lady Rebels will look to bounce back and even the series on Thursday.
