Some Military Facilities are now Armed
As the nation still grieves the deadly July 16th attacks on the military facilities in Tennessee, Governor Phil Bryant is making sure Mississippi military facilities are prepared.
Governor Bryant issued an executive order to allow National Guard Major General Augustus Collins to arm certain full-time military personnel at military facilities. This also includes certain National Guard recruiting centers. The National Guard recruiting center in Gulfport is one of those.
Sergeant Gordon Gros now walks around the facility on Courthouse Road with a hand gun on his belt and he says he definitely feels he can better protect his facility and the community.
Since 2009, there have been at least nine attacks on military facilities. There are approximately 12,500 soldiers and airmen in Mississippi’s National Guard.
