Solid waste agreement in Harrison County

The Harrison County Utility Authority Board voted for Team Waste in a six year contract to provide garbage and recycling services to residents.
One major change for the 43,000 units in Harrison County is that Team Waste will only be picking up garbage and recycling once a week. The City of Gulfport announced their withdrawal from the agreement and will continue to look for bids.
This caused the prices to increase in the contract, making it $9.75 per house for garbage and recycling pickup. Harrison County Utility Authority President Marlin Ladner said, “We had to reduce it to once a week because the contract. The present contract will increase 1.4 million. If we picked up twice a week it would be even more.”
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said, “When we have problems that we can work directly through the provider who is the collector as opposed to going through the agency because most of the calls are going to come to our elected officials anyway so we want to be able to respond more directly.”
Team Waste will begin servicing Harrison County in October. The board is expected to vote if Pelican Waste will collect trash in the county at the next meeting.
