Social media helps find fur-ever homes

Our growing digital age is helping shelter pets find forever homes.

With more than 50,000 followers on Facebook, the Humane Society of South Mississippi is reaching potential adopters, fosters, and donators throughout our area and beyond state lines.

Every day the Humane Society posts the pictures and stories of their shelter pets which may include how long the animal has been there or what their needs are.

It’s an effort to let residents and visitors know more about the animal behind the cage in hopes of increasing their chance of getting adopted. Shelter Relations Manager Bianca Janik said, “Contrary to popular belief, if you just ‘like’ a post or ‘love’ a post or whatever reaction you give to them, it does not do anything for that organization’s post to be seen. You actually have to comment or share, and the more you comment and share, the more people will see their posts. It’s such a great feeling to know that our community is backing us up and supporting us in everything that we do here.”

February is ‘Have a Heart’ Month dedicated to funding treatment for heartworm positive shelter pets. Over the years they’ve raised thousands of dollars on Facebook.

You can head to the Humane Society of South Mississippi’s Facebook page starting February 1st if you’d like to donate.
