Small businesses hopeful people will shop local this tax-free weekend

Families across Mississippi will be taking advantage of that 7% discount this weekend to prepare for the upcoming school year. as you make that shopping list, small businesses are hoping you’ll stop in.”

Small businesses are often overlooked on tax-free weekend, but businesses like Posies and Puddles, a children’s clothing store in Pascagoula, feel that the additional tax-free day will offer people a chance to shop local.

“I think right now with this economy, any little break that people can get – I know everyone is working very hard,” said Abby Wills, owner of Posies and Puddles. “I think it’s a great way to get everyone out, shopping local, shopping Mississippi.”

A lack of community support has been hard on some businesses, like Old School Tutoring and Toys.

“We realize that parents and people don’t really shop small businesses during tax-free weekends, so unfortunately, we do not open during tax-free weekends,” said Old School owner Christina Bates.

To combat this, Old School offers a service where they personally do all the school supply shopping for families so they can avoid the hassle. Those school supply bags are tax-free on their website.

Both businesses say the best part about this holiday – your money stays locals, too.

“You’re helping me, you’re helping my family,” Bates said. “You’re investing in us, so we can invest in you. Small businesses allow you to build a relationship with somebody, and that’s what we’re about.”

“I just think it’s so important to support your local community,” said Abby Wills. “I think you get out of your community what you put into it. Shopping local is wonderful. It’s helping friends.. families..

The last day for tax-free weekend is Sunday, July 14.
