Skydweller Aero unveils new aircraft at Stennis International Airport
There were some major developments out of Stennis International Airport on March 25th.
It’s called Skydweller and will be the nations only large unmanned solar powered aircraft capable of perpetual flight while leaving zero carbon footprint. And it was built right here in Mississippi.
“So much potential for the future is being lifted off right here in our own backyard. And it shows how far technology has come but it also shows that we can do this right here in Mississippi, with Mississippi people on the ground, helping this to be successful,” said Senator Roger Wicker. “And is it ok for me to say the skies the limit.”
The aircraft can fly for up to 90 days or longer, carrying payloads of up to 800 pounds. Once in the field, Skydweller will be able to provide continuous coverage above war zones, survey naval activity in contested waters, and detect drug smugglers and pirates at sea.
“So illegal fishing, drug running, human trafficking. Any type of nefarious acts down there,” said Robert Miller, the CEO of Skydweller Aero.
Aside from its amazing capabilities, there’s another notable aspect about the aircraft, it’s size. The Skydweller has a wingspan bigger than a 747’s. That’s about the size of a football field endzone to endzone. Despite this however, the aircraft only weighs about the same as a Ford F-150.
